SUMMARY:Pyjama Trousers Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This is the perfect course for those who wish to learn to make their own pyjama trousers using the Tilly and the Buttons “Jaime” pyjama trousers pattern. The Workshop is best suited for those who have used a sewing machine before or completed the Beginners Introduction to Sewing Course. \nThis is fantastic course for those wanting an introduction into making clothing as your will learn how to read and interpret a pattern and learn simple garment construction techniques. \nAt the end of the workshop you will have one complete pair of adult pyjamas trousers. \nYou will receive your own Tilly and the Buttons “Jaime” pattern which is included in the class fee and yours to keep. \nDuring the workshop you will learn step by step how to lay\, pin\, cut and assemble your pyjama trousers. \nWe will break about half way through the session for refreshments\, as sewing is thirsty work for mind and body therefore it’s only natural that there will be plenty of tea\, coffee and cake to keep us going! \nThis workshop is made up of one\, 3 hour session. \nMaterials required:\nYou will need to bring your own fabric for the pyjama trousers.\nIf the fabric is 150cm wide; you will need 2.10m.\nIf the fabric is 115cm wide; you will need 2.5m.\nCotton\, viscose\, cotton lawn\, cotton gauze\, brushed cotton\, viscose twill\, silky satin are all suitable options \nBelow are some suggested fabrics that will make your pyjama trousers comfortable to wear depending on the time of year.\nSuggested fabrics for Autumn/Winter: brushed cotton\, flannelette.\nSuggested fabric for Spring/Summer: 100% cotton\, cotton lawn or viscose\, silky satin. \nIMPORTANT TIP: Pre-wash and and iron your fabric prior to the class as these fabrics will shrink on the first wash!! SUMMARY:Beginners Introduction to Sewing Course
DESCRIPTION:This course is designed especially for beginners to sewing. If you have never used a sewing machine before\, or used one many a moon ago and would like to reacquaint yourself with sewing\, then this course will give you the skills and confidence to get started sewing. Over the duration of this course you will learn about the sewing machine\, how to sew a variety of different stitches\, seams\, how to\, make button holes\, hand stitching techniques to name a few. The objective is to equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills to give you the confidence to work on many different sewing projects going forward and to make sure its a fun learning experience that leaves you wanting to sew more and more. \nWe will break about half way through each session for refreshments\, as sewing is thirsty work for mind and body therefore it’s only natural that there will be plenty of tea\, coffee and cake to keep us going! \nThis course will run over four weeks\, made up of four\, 3 hour sessions on 7/09\, 14/09\, 21/09 & 28/09 \nSession 1\nLearn the basics about the sewing machine and techniques:\nIdentify the parts of a sewing machine and become familiar with them.\nThread\, wind a bobbin and adjust the machine through its various settings.\nIdentify and sew different machine stitches and seams\, creating your own samples.\nOverview of fabrics and different needles. \nSession 2\nBuild on the skills from Session 1 and make beautiful Bunting:\nLearn how to make pattern pieces.\nLearn about grain lines and seam allowances.\nHow to lay and cut out your bunting.\nHow to sew sharp pointed corners.\nTrimming down corners.\nHow to sew on Bias Binding. \nMaterials required for Session 2: You will need to bring 25cm lengths of various colours or prints of 100% cotton fabric of your bunting flags. 2.5 meters of 2.5cm wide bias binding in a matching colour as well as thread to match. \nSession 3\nBuild on the skills from Session 2 and make an Easy Square Shaped Tote Bag:\nLearn to lay and cut out a pattern.\nPin and stitch pattern pieces together.\nHow to sew straps and sew on trims.\nHow to press out seams.\nLearn finishing techniques – i.e. Overlocking. \nMaterials required for Session 3: You will need to bring 1 meter length of your choice of fabric for the tote bag and 2.40 meters of cotton tape / webbing – no wider than 1 inch and thread to match the fabric and trim of your choosing. \nSession 4\nBuild on the skills from Session 3 and make a 45cm x 45cm Envelope Cushion Cover with Button Closure:\nLearn to measure and mark out fabric.\nUse interfacing for rigidity.\nHow to position\, mark out and sew button holes and buttons.\nHow to sew corners.\nHow to finish the seams using an over locker. \nMaterials required for Session 4: You will need to bring 60cm length of your choice of fabric for the cushion cover\, plus 3 medium sized buttons and thread to match. DESCRIPTION:This course is for intermediate beginners to sewing and is perfect for those who have sewn before and made a few things\, but aren’t quite sure they are using the correct techniques or would like to get a better more professional finish to their items. It may be that you last used a sewing machine many years ago and want to get back into it. If you have an idea about what a seam allowance or grain line is and can stick to it\, then this is the right course for you. \nThis course will give you the skills and confidence to get sewing correctly and learn the right sewing habits. Over the length of this course you will learn about the sewing machine\, how to sew a variety of different stitches\, how to insert zips\, make button holes\, hand stitching\, to name a few. The objective is to equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills to give you the confidence to work on many different sewing projects using the techniques learnt during the 4 weeks. \nWe will break about half way through each session for refreshments\, as sewing is thirsty work for mind and body therefore it’s only natural that there will be plenty of tea\, coffee and cake to keep us going! \nThis course will run over four weeks\, made up of four\, 3 hour sessions on 11/09\, 18/09\, 25/09 & 2/10 \nSession 1\nGet back to basics with the sewing machine and learn some key techniques:\nIdentify the parts of a sewing machine and become familiar with them.\nThread\, wind and adjust the machine tension.\nIdentify and sew different machine stitches\, creating your own samples.\nHow to read and interpret a basic pattern. \nIf you are following on from the Beginners Course\, you can choose from one of three items to make in this lesson. You can choose to sew either an oven glove\, cooking apron or quilted make-up bag. \nSession 2\nBuild on the skills from Session 1 and make a tote bag with front pocket and boxed gusset:\nLearn to lay and cut out a pattern.\nPin and stitch pattern pieces together.\nHow to sew corners.\nHow to press out seams.\nHow to sew on trims. \nMaterials required for Session 2: You will need to bring 1 x meter ( if wider than 130 cm) or if 112 cm wide you will need 1.30 meters length of your choice of fabric for the tote bag and 3.20 m of cotton tape or webbing used to re-enforce the straps and act as a trim and 1 x spool of thread to match. \nSession 3\nBuild on the skills from Session 2 and make a 45 x 45cm applique cushion:\nLearn about interfacing and how to use it.\nLearn how to applique.\nDifferent types of zips\, application and installation.\nTrimming down corners.\nHow to use an over locker to finish your seams. \nMaterials required for Session 3: You will need to bring 60 cm length of your choice of fabric for the applique cushion cover\, along with a simple template of the design you wish to applique and necessary length of chosen fabric for the applique design\, 1 x 35 cm Zipper\, 1 x 50 cm x 50 cm cushion inner as well as thread to match the applique and the cushion for stitching. \nSession 4\nBuild on the skills from Session 3 and make a quilted hot water bottle cover with buttons and buttonhole closures:\nLearn to measure and mark out fabric.\nHow to create your grid and sew wadding.\nLearn how to make and sew bias binding.\nHow to sew\, trim\, snip and notch curved seams.\nHow to mark and sew button holes and buttons. \nMaterials required for Session 4: You will need to bring 3 x separate pieces of 50 cm length of your choice of fabric ( 3 x fat quarters will do ) for the hot water bottle cover\, 1 x length of 50 cm of plain 100% cotton fabric for the lining of the wadding and 50 cm of 6 oz wadding\, a hot water bottle\, button and thread to match. \nLevel: 2-3. This is an intermediate level class\, and not suitable for complete beginners. You will need to have some knowledge of sewing and how to use the sewing machine. DESCRIPTION:The quilting technique workshops are perfect for those wanting to learn the basics of the different essential quilting techniques covered over separate sessions. (please see course description here) \nThe different techniques are: Paper Piecing\, Confetti Quilting\, Log Cabin\, Diagonal Strip Quilting\, Applique Design\, Quilt-as-you-go and Free Motion Quilting (FMQ). \nEach technique is quick\, easy and great for using up your stash or scrap fabric. You may decide to use the design as an individual piece for a scattered cushion or tote bag. Alternatively\, you may decide to follow a colour scheme and use these pieces to create a large quilt repeating all or some of the designs. \nDuring the session you will learn to create one block using the specified technique coving all the skills required. This will enable you to make more blocks in your own time which you can piece together to create a large quilt should you wish. \nWritten instructions\, requirements and measurements will be provided. \nThis session is the:\nQuilt-as-you-go.\nQuilt-As-You-Go is similar to regular quilting except that you are quilting individual pieces all at the same time. Then this is the best place to start your fashion sewing journey. \nOn this course I will show you how to read\, interpret and alter the pattern and take you through each step of sewing your skirt so that you leave with a beautiful skirt made especially to your measurements. You will gain the knowledge and skill to do it again by applying the principals learnt during the four weeks. \nWe will break about half way through each session for refreshments\, as sewing is thirsty work for mind and body therefore it’s only natural that there will be plenty of tea\, coffee and cake to keep us going! \nThis course will run over four weeks\, made up of four\, 3 hour sessions: 20/09\, 27/09\, 04/10 & 11/10 \nSession 1\nPattern adaptation.\nLearn how to take your measurements and how to interpret the pattern.\nLearn how to use your measurements to adjust the pattern.\nLearn how to lay out a pattern.\nLean how to cut out pieces required for your skirt. \nSession 2\nFusing and skirt assembly.\nCut out interfacing and fuse pieces for your skirt.\nLearn to sew darts.\nLearn to sew panels and how to finish the seams.\nLearn how to fit the skirt and transfer alterations to the pattern pieces. \nMaterials required for Session 2: You will need to bring 0.5 meter length of iron on interfacing fabric\, 2m of 115cm wide fabric of your choice\, 1.5m of 115cm wide lining\, 2 x reels of matching thread. \nSession 3\nSkirt assembly continued.\nPrepare the facing.\nLearn how to insert a zip.\nLearn how to sew in place the facing.\nLearn how to sew in place the lining and attach the zipper.\nLearn how to finish off the facing. \nMaterials required for Session 3: You will need to bring 1 x 25cm long invisible zipper. \nSession 4\nFinishing Techniques.\nLearn how to measure and sew in place the hems on the fabric.\nLearn how to measure and sew in place the hems on the lining.\nLearn hand finishing techniques. \nLevel: 3 – Confident using a sewing machine\, can sew to different seam allowances\, can zig zag stitch\, understand about back stitching at start & end of seams.
