Learn how to make your own baby quilt blanket using sewing and quilting techniques in this 2 session course.
These charming quilts are so inspirational and will delight any new family member. Scrap fabric is ideal for this project as it not only creates interest but encourages fingers to explore.

This course will run over two weeks, made up of two, 3 hour sessions on: 12/05 & 14/05
Skills and techniques that you will learn on this course
- Introduction to quilting and general terminology
- Introduction to Till Roll Crumb Quilting
- Raw-Edge Applique
- Creating a quilting sandwich (top layer, wadding, backing fabric)
- Transferring applique design onto fusible bonding web (Heat & Bond)
- Cutting out the applique design
- Pre-assemble design and fusing pieces in place
- Tips & techniques
Requirements for Session 1
- 2 ½” strips of fabric – possibly a Jelly Roll 12 – 15 strips; alternatively you could make your own strips before the class.
- Paper Till Roll – Ideally you would like to purchase a width of 2” or 5cm or 50mm till roll.
- Assorted Scrap Fabric for your Till Roll Crumb (3 x 75cm length of till roll scraps)
- Applique Design – You are welcome to bring your own design. Colouring books are a great source for designs. The size of my Elephant is: 5 x 8”. I will bring one or two designs for you to use if you wish.
- 3 squares to create your Applique Design (this could be scrap fabric, strips or single fabric) – size 15 x 20cm square or 8 x 8”
- Fusible Web (Bondaweb or Heat & Bond) for your Applique Design
- Assorted Threads
- Sewing machine needle
At the end of Session 1 you should be ready to sandwich your work (top fabric + wadding + backing fabric) at the beginning of Session 2.
Requirements for Session 2
- 50cm Binding fabric – This can be made up of scrap fabric or strips from the Jelly Roll
- 1m Backing Fabric – You could always use left over strips to make up your backing fabric or a single piece of Fabric
- 1m Wadding / Batting (no polyester, please)
- 505 Adhesive Fabric Spray (available from Amazon)
- Assorted Threads
- Sewing machine needle
Other Requirements: Besides your sewing machine and manual, you will require some other supplies.
- A walking foot (A walking foot makes it easier to sew through three layers of fabric (fabric, wadding and backing). Besides that, the walking foot ensures very little movement of fabric and puckering. If you don’t have a walking foot, it’s not an issue).
- ¼” foot if you have one
- Rotary cutter (with sharp blade), fabric scissors, cutting mat, cutting rulers
- Sharp pins & needles
- Assorted thread
- Dylon Fabric Starch
I have sewing machines available for use during the session, but if you do have your own sewing machine, I would recommend you bring it along so that you can become more and more confident in using your machines features.
We will break about half way through the session for refreshments, as sewing is thirsty work for mind and body therefore it’s only natural that there will be plenty of tea, coffee and cake to keep us going!
Class Length: Two, 3 hour sessions
Max in a class: 5
Price: £90
