Introduction to the Overlocker Course

12 February 2022 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

£130

If you have an overlocker and are not sure where to start with using it, then this is the perfect course for you. The overlocker is a fantastic machine that really can do so much, but best of all, it will give your sewn projects that professional finish. It’s a machine that is loved and feared all at the same time, but like anything in life, once you get to grips with it and all it’s settings, you will truly love it!

During the course, you will learn how to thread your overlocker, learn how to change the tension settings , change needles, etc so that you learn how to use the different stitches and settings.

The objective is to equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills to give you the confidence to work on many different sewing projects going forward on your overlocker.

We will break about half way through each session for refreshments, as sewing is thirsty work for mind and body therefore it’s only natural that there will be plenty of tea, coffee and cake to keep us going!

This course will run over three weeks, made up of three, 3 hour sessions on 12th Feb, 26th Feb & 5th Mar.

Session 1
Learn the basics about your over locker machine and techniques:
Identify the parts of the over locker
Thread and adjust the machine through its various settings.
Identify and sew different stitches and seams, creating your own samples and quick go to guide of the tension settings for future reference.

Materials required for Session 1: None

Session 2 and 3
Build on the skills from Session 1 and make a Drop-Shoulder Top:
You will learn how to lay and cut out your top
Learn how to sew it together, using a normal sewing machine and stretch stitches, as well as over locking settings to finish off the seams and hems to give you that professional finish.
Learn how to clean your over locker to ensure it keeps running well.

Materials required for Session 2 and 3:
I recommend a stretch jersey fabric is best for this project.
Cotton Jersey, viscose Jersey, Cotton Lycra, Polyester stretches are good choices. However if you wish to use a different fabric, please get in touch to let me know.

If the fabric is 140cm wide – you will need 1 x metre.
If the fabric is 112cm wide – you will need 1.50 metres.
2 x spools of 100m Gutermann sew all polyester thread for the main stitching on the sewing machine.
4 x 1000m spools of thread to match your fabric for the over locker.
Sewing machine needles for Jersey or stretch fabrics – I recommend Schmetz Jersey needles.
