These workshops have been developed for equipping students aged 8rys+ with the necessary fundamental sewing skills and techniques to enable them to explore the wonderful world of sewing, be creative, and have a lot of fun along the way.
Day 1 – Introduction to sewing
Day one is filled with fun, learning foundation sewing techniques and creativity. This day is imperative if your child has never sewn or is new to sewing and would like to become more accurate with their sewing skills. The children will learn how to wind a bobbin correctly, thread a sewing machine and sew in lines, decorating a beautiful linen and cotton mix tea towel with rows of different stitch types on the sewing machine in a variety of thread colours.
This builds confidence, control and accuracy. Reinforcing how to set up a sewing machine independently which is a necessary Skill required for any sewist.
We then move onto adding applique to personalise their tea-towel. This involves cutting out, bonding and sewing on a design of their choice from a selection of templates we will provide to make their tea towel unique to them.
We finish the tea-towel with the students writing and machine stitching their names on learning to sew in a embroidered style.
This is a lovely keep-sake, something they can be proud of, that can be used around the home and is a great reminder of their first sewing experience. Isn’t that just fabulous!
We will introduce the students to fashion drawing and have time for creativity, discussing ideas allows the children to explore their creative side.
The children will then learn about pattern markings and how to pin and cut out a simple elasticated skirt. They will stitch this together, step-by-step and finish their session with a completed skirt and personalised tea-towel to take home.
Day 2 – Follow on from Day 1
On day two, the students will make a fully lined, cross-the-body bag with personalised applique detailing. We will cover machine set up and take a look at patterns where the students will learn what the different markings mean, how they are to lay out and cut their fabric and stitch the bag together step by step.
This project will cover cutting out, piecing together and stitching curves and points, lining the bag and adding trims with the sewing machine. We will teach the students to attach a popper fastener which will be sewn on by hand.
All in all a fun filled, skill-packed sewing project that will leave the children feeling super proud of their creativity and sewing success.
Drop-off is between 9am and 9:30 am and class will start at 9:30 sharp.
We will break for snacks, lunch and refreshments throughout the day so please ensure you provide your child with appropriate food and drink. We do ask that nuts are not brought, in case of allergies and please let me know if your child has any allergies at the time of booking so that we can accommodate this.
If your child would like to bring their own sewing machine please feel free to do so (this will actually help them build their confidence in using their own machine and equipment). If you have any questions or would like to book a place for your child, please do email me directly on claire@eli-b.co.uk
